This week, the overall price of vegetables has shown a fluctuating downward trend, with a small fluctuation range and a relatively small downward range.
On August 23, the weighted average price of vegetables in Xinfadi market was 3.93 yuan/kg, down 1.75% from 4.0 yuan/kg in the same period last week (August 16); up 24.37% from 3.16 yuan/kg in the same period last year. A slight decrease from the previous week; a significant increase from the previous year. Last weekend, the price rose by 26.98% year-on-year, and the year-on-year increase narrowed slightly this week.
This week, the overall price trend of vegetables finally began to turn downward. After rising for nearly a month, it stopped rising this week and slowly fell for several consecutive days.
The overall decline in vegetable prices is due to the reduction in rainfall in the production area. The process of vegetable harvesting is much smoother than in the previous period, and the production capacity of vegetables is gradually recovering. Previously, frequent rainfall had a great impact on vegetable harvesting. There were vegetables in the fields, but they could not be harvested or transported out, which aggravated the fluctuation of vegetable prices.
This week, harvesters can go to the fields, and some vehicles that purchase vegetables can also drive all the way to the fields, so that the supply capacity of vegetables is gradually restored. It can be determined that the factors that caused price fluctuations and increases due to the impact of rainfall on harvesting in the early stage have basically been significantly alleviated this week. At the same time, the quality of vegetables that were soaked by rain in the early stage has been significantly affected at the time. The quality of some vegetables with slightly less impact has gradually recovered and can continue to be harvested and put on the market, so that the supply capacity has been restored. In particular, some perishable vegetables have reduced rotting and loss after saying goodbye to the high temperature and high humidity weather, which has also restored the supply capacity. In this regard, the price decline of several vegetables is directly related to the reduction in rainfall. For example, celery needed to be transported to the roadside by tractors in the early stage, but this week, vehicles can drive all the way to the fields, reducing the link of "pour vegetables" by tractors, and the market supply began to be sufficient; for example, coriander, the perishability was reduced, and the coriander transported to the market could be sold in the market for a long time without rotting, reducing losses, reducing sales costs, and prices began to fall; the price decline of other vegetables such as lettuce and loose leaf lettuce is also directly related to the reduction of rotting. At the same time, after the rainfall decreased, the production capacity of bean vegetables planted in the open field was also recovering. Previously, the flowers on the bean seedlings were knocked off by rain, and even if they were not knocked off, they did not bear fruit in the end, and the yield dropped significantly. This week, the fruit setting rate increased, the yield also increased, the supply capacity recovered, and the price fell. However, this recovery of production capacity is a gradual process. The production capacity cannot be restored to the original state all at once, and the price cannot be restored to normal all at once. So this recovery process takes time. The same is true for some other similar solanaceous vegetables.
However, some of the water-damaged vegetables can be restored, while others are difficult to restore. For example, some of the cauliflower and Chinese cabbage have been soaked by rain and have lost their commodity properties, and some have rotted in the fields. This kind of production reduction is difficult to recover in a short period of time, and we have to wait for the maturity of the new crop of vegetables. For example, Chinese cabbage is in a shortage stage recently. The new crop of Chinese cabbage is the late crop of cabbage in Chengde and Zhangjiakou, Hebei. It will take about 20 days for the local late crop of Chinese cabbage to be harvested. Before the new crop of Chinese cabbage is on the market, the supply shortage situation is difficult to reverse. Similar to Chinese cabbage are cauliflower, broccoli, bitter chrysanthemum, loose-leaf lettuce, green-skinned winter melon, small hairy winter melon, etc.
This week, the price of lettuce has fallen significantly, mainly because the rot phenomenon has been reduced. However, even if the price has fallen significantly, it is still significantly higher than the same period last year, and the output is still significantly lower than the same period last year. Some other vegetables whose prices have fallen are still significantly higher than the same period last year on a year-on-year basis.
Therefore, although the overall price trend of vegetables began to turn downward this week, it was only to stop rising, and the price decline was still relatively limited.
This week, the price of cucumbers, which had been abnormally high before, fell significantly. This was mainly due to the fact that new cucumbers began to be put on the market. New cucumbers were put on the market in Liaocheng, Shandong, Chaoyang, Liaoning, Langfang, Hebei, and other places. The output was gradually increasing, and the price fluctuated downward, with a significant decline; the price of green onions, which were also abnormally high, was still perishable due to the long-term rainfall. It will take some time to realize the price decline.
It is reported that some plots in Shandong are still muddy recently, and autumn vegetables cannot be planted. The autumn vegetables planted in greenhouses in Liaoning have been soaked by rain. There are still some uncertainties in the subsequent listing of vegetables, and the connection of the vegetable supply chain is still not smooth. Therefore, our feeling is: it is unlikely that vegetable prices will continue to rise, but it is also unlikely that vegetable prices will fall quickly. The overall price of vegetables will continue to run at a high level for a period of time, and the tight supply of vegetables will be difficult to change for a while. The vegetables that are currently in relatively sufficient supply are mainly potatoes, onions, carrots, and some other varieties of radishes. The supply capacity of fresh vegetables is still weak. Even if prices fall in the later period, they will fall slowly and gradually until the new crop of vegetables is on the market to fill the supply gap.
Two weeks ago, we talked about: "The impact of adverse weather on vegetable production still has a lag period, and vegetable prices will remain high in the short term", "In the following period, vegetable production will basically enter a stage of gradual recovery". It is currently in the recovery period.
